He contributed in eradication of poverty from and termination of hunger in the whole world through food aid to and improvement of food security environment in developing countries. It attracted attention that the head of WFP received Honorary Doctor of International Development from YU.WFP is the largest humanitarian aid organization in the world which was established in 1961 for eradication of poverty from global village through food aid. It has its HQ in Rome, Italy, and offices in 120 countries and supports more than 100 million poor persons in more than 80 countries every year. Such vision and role of WFP have the same goal with the vision, “A creative and innovative university that contributes to the prosperity of human society,” declared by YU this year. Especially, it is also related to “Saemaul International Development” area which is internationally-accepted specialization studies of YU.WFP implemented “Saemaul Zero Hunger Community Project” in developing countries including Tanzania, Rwanda, Nepal, Bangladesh, etc. with application of Saemaul Development Principle of Korea to solve the issue of absolute poverty from 2011 to 2019 and obtained large performances. WFP makes its activities based on the leadership of Secretary-General Beasley and the passion, devotion, and professionalism of 20,000 staff in more than 120 countries and received Nobel Peace Prize in 2020 for endeavors to eradicate poverty, improvement of conditions for peace in disputed territories, and core role in multilateral cooperation, in cooperation with governments, NGOs, other UN organizations, and private enterprises, etc. GO Gun, who served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea and is Honorary Chairman of Climate Change Center, wrote the recommendation to confer Honorary Doctor of International Development to Secretary-General Beasley. Honorary Chairman GO Gun made an evaluation in his recommendation, “WFP made a large contribution in making model cases of international development & cooperation projects to disperse the universe value of Saemaul Undong consisting of diligence, self-reliance, and cooperation and to support beneficiaries for escaping from poverty by themselves, over basic food aid.” In the Honorary Doctorate Degree Conferment Ceremony held in LEE Si-won Global Convention Hall of YU Cheonma Art Center at 7:00 pm on the 14th, Chairman HAN Jae-sook of Yeongnam School Corporation, Governor LEE Cheol-woo of Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Mayor JO Hyeon-il of Gyeongsan-si participated for congratulations. Especially, BAN Ki-moon, who served as Secretary-General of UN and is Chairman of BAN Ki-moon Foundation for Better Future, transmitted a congratulatory message to the decree conferment ceremony. Chairman of BAN Ki-moon said, “Secretary-General Beasley developed WFP significantly with his excellent leadership. Nevertheless, the issue of worldwide poverty is still in serious situation and the role of WFP has become more important. Korea is a model case that it became a main donor country of WFP from a beneficiary country after only one generation. WFP contributed in worldwide expansion of Saemaul Spirit by leading “Saemaul Zero Hunger Community Project” containing Saemaul Spirit of Korea with success. I think that the Honorary Doctorate Degree received by Secretary-General Beasley today is an encouragement message to perform WFP's sublime mission sincerely. I hope more fruits may be obtained in the whole world through joint endeavors by Korean and AFP. Secretary-General Beasley served as a congressman and governor of South Carolina and has been leading WFP since April 2017. When he served as the governor, he made South Carolina have the lowest unemployment rate in the USA by inducing reformation of economic structure and innovative private capital investments and his administrative capability and leadership as a leader was accepted. He showed his excellent diplomatic capability playing the role of a bridge for close cooperation in global issues by the USA and the world with establishment of Center for Global Strategies in 2005. The vision showed as a leader and sufficient experiences on international stages are shining in WFP.” Secretary-General David M. Beasley of WFP said in the degree conferment ceremony held in YU on the 14th, “It is an honor and I thank that I receive the honorary doctorate degree from YU, which is the center of Saemaul Undong Studies and the researches of Korea, as the representative of whole staff of WFP. I hope that this is a motive of strategic cooperation for YU and WFP to seek for self-sustaining power of the world's most vulnerable and hungry regions by joining forces with Korean companies, NGOs, and research institutes. President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “I remember the promise of Secretary-General Beasley to devote himself to the global village of Zero Hunger at the time of inauguration in 2017. Especially, “Saemaul Zero Hunger Community Project” showed great performances and leads changes in developing countries. I think that it was possible due to the leadership of Secretary-General Beasley and devotion of WFP members. YU makes every endeavor in education and researches to cultivate talents who will contribute in human societies. I hope that talents who studied in YU will become global leaders to make a better global village with WFP together.” Meanwhile, YU intends to implement the project to overcome poverty and terminate hunger in developing countries including Asia and Africa through Saemaul local development models. If YU’s performances and know-how of education and researches in Saemaul international development area accumulated for more than 40 years are combined with the organizational and executive skills of WFP, synergy effect will be generated to overcome poverty of global village through mid-to-long term local development projects. YU created Saemaul Undong Studies with establishment of institutions and educational & training agencies, etc. as well as Park Chung Hee Saemaul Institution, Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, International Development & Cooperation Center, and faculty and graduate courses such as Department of Saemaul International Development and has been implementing various projects in Saemaul international development area. Especially, 808 persons from 71 countries entered Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, which was established to cultivate developing countries’ Saemaul leaders, until now and, among them, 682 persons received Saemaul Master’s Degree and work as main policy establishers, international development professionals, and Saemaul Undong leaders in central ministries/offices, public organizations, and international development NGOs, etc. of many countries.

It plays a sufficient role of diplomatic envoy team in educational and cultural areas. Last month, President CHOI Oe-chool of YU visited Cambodia on a business trip with a schedule of five days and four nights. There are many opinions that the business trip by the head of a private university obtained amazing diplomatic performances in private sector over visit of governments and main organizations of Cambodia. President CHOI’s visit in Cambodia was arranged by Deputy Prime Minister and main minister-level persons and attracted as high national interest as being broadcasted by local national broadcasting company to whole country. In fact, President CHOI is highly trusted by Prime Minister Hun Sen as a policy advisor. It is said that the education-sharing performance obtained by YU in Cambodia was possible due to the foundation of such trust. Therefore, it is expected that international exchange started with Saemaul Studies will be expanded to other areas. President CHOI met presidents of main universities, NGO chairmen, and international organizational personnel, etc. as well as high-level personnel of Cambodia including Deputy Prime Minister and ministers, etc. of Cambodia and had discussions on the direction of long-term development of Cambodia. President CHOI met cabinet members as well as Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly and had discussions on cooperation with YU to support establishment of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Cambodian universities and implementation of local OVOP (One Village, One Product) Project. During the discussions, Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly said, “We are implementing various development support projects with KOICA, etc. of Korea. Human resources, technologies, and know-how are essentially required for effective operation of the projects. Especially, it is most important to cultivate talents with operation of 2+2 dual-degree system after establishment of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in main higher education institutions of Cambodia such as national universities and private universities, etc.Cooperation by YU having the know-how in education and research areas will be highly helpful.” Therefore, President CHOI made a promise, “We will try for exchange and cooperation with governments as well as international exchange among universities. Over the exchange in educational area for cultivation of Saemaul leaders, we will actively cooperate in possible parts of YU including national policy projects for Cambodian development.” <President CHOI Oe-chool met Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly of Cambodia and had a discussion on mutual cooperation methods> Before meeting Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly, President CHOI met Minister Hang Chuon of Education, Youth, and Sports of Cambodia, shared the progress of establishment of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Western University, and had a discussion on expansion of Saemaul international development area in higher education of Cambodia. Minister Hang Chuon is known to have great expectations for the establishment of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Western University and said President CHOI, “Operation of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Western University will be actively supported at the level of the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, I’d like to establish Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Royal University of Phnom Penh and operate 2+2 dual-degree system. President CHOI commented, “Active interest and support at government level is required for operation and settlement of Department of Saemaul Economic Development. YU will also make every endeavor to improve educational environment and strengthen education and research capabilities in Cambodia.” YU has wide network with not only Cambodian governmental agencies but also international organizations and NGOs, etc. President CHOI visited Cambodia Development Center (CD Center) and Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) and had discussions on cultivation of Saemaul leaders and execution of local internship and service activity programs of YU students with participation in Saemaul Development Training Program. CD Center is an agency to manage overseas support projects of advanced countries and research governmental policies which are being implemented or conducted in Cambodia and SEAMEO is an inter-governmental cooperation organization established to improve mutual cooperation in educational, scientific, and cultural areas of 11 Southeast Asian countries. Especially, Chairman Sok Silo of CD Center met President CHOI and commented, “Saemaul Undong is the most suitable for long-term national development strategy of Cambodia. In order to make the foundation for sustainable development of Cambodia, continuous formation of network with YU is required.” As described above, the role of YU becomes larger in international society. This is the result of leading endeavors of YU which have been made for construction of educational & research infrastructure and global network in Saemaul international development area over the past 40 years. YU established and has been operating institutions and educational & training agencies, etc. as well as Park Chung Hee Saemaul Institution, Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul, International Development & Cooperation Center, and faculty and graduate courses such as Department of Saemaul International Development. Saemaul Studies, a kind of traditional studies, is also regularly exported. Department of Saemaul Economic Development was established and is being operated in local universities of Philippines and Cambodia and, recently, YU made an agreement on establishment of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Werabe University of Ethiopia. YU has discussions on establishment of Department of Saemaul Studies in many universities including national universities in Ethiopia, Zambia requested YU to support local establishment of Department of Saemaul Studies, and love calls rush from developing countries of Asia and Africa for transmission of Saemaul Studies and Saemaul Undong.

Subject of “New Frontiers in Medical Research” Sharing performances of new drug development and medical researches and expecting future healthcare industry Presentation of performances and discussions by professionals in each area of both universities [July 11, 2022] <Joint symposium by YU and Kyungpook National University> YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) held a joint symposium with Kyungpook National University (KNU) for 75th Anniversary of YU. The symposium was held in the Respiratory System Hall of YU Hospital on the 7th with the subject of “New Frontiers in Medical Research” for improvement of mutual cooperation through academic exchange. It was planned to review representative performances of new drug development and medical researches to expect future healthcare industry. Professionals in each area of KNU and YU presented the performances and progress of past researches and the issues to be solved in future and had in-depth discussions. In the event, President HONG Won-hwa of KNU and President CHOI Oe-chool of YU participated. President CHOI Oe-chool said the meaning of the symposium in his congratulatory message, “I hope that both universities, which lead Medi City of Korea, share the excellent performances in chronic disease area including obesity, diabetes, and metabolic diseases through the symposium,” and President HONG Won-hwa of KNU expressed his expectations, “This is a meaningful opportunity to lead future healthcare industry. In the keynote talk in Part 2, Professor LEE In-kyu presented “Traces and performances of new drug development for functional improvement of mitochondria.” In Part 3, Professor LEE Geun-woo of YU Hospital presented “Medical technology of exosomes using stem cells,” Professor JANG Min-cheol presented “Present and future of medical AI development,” and Professor MOON Jun-seong urged local interest in cultivation of doctor scientists. Meanwhile, Medical College has been cultivating talents to make contributions in human society by practicing proper medical skills to improve the health of mankind and the quality of life under the banner of “75 years with the people and 75 years to be shared with mankind” until 75th Anniversary of YU. Production of 2 CEOs from YU … 2 or more CEOs by each of 12 universities 1st place in non-metropolitan private universities, proving “The YU alumni power in business” [July 06, 2022] YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) took 7th place in the universities produced 100 great CEOs of Korea in 2022. It’s the 1st place in non-metropolitan private universities. According to the analysis result of “2022 Hankyung Business’ 100 great CEOs” selected by Hankyung Business and NICE Information Service, YU took 7th place with production of 2 CEOs. Seoul National University took 1st place with production of 28 CEOs and was followed by Yonsei University and Korea University. Each of 12 universities produced 2 or more CEOs in the country and YU is the only university among non-metropolitan private universities. YU took 9th place with production of 5 CEOs according to the analysis result of CEOs of 30 large listed companies in Korea reported by Data News this year, took 12th place in CEOs of 1,000 major enterprises reported by Unico Search, a professional headhunting company, last year, and took 7th place in the universities produced CEO of 100 large enterprises reported by Economist, a current affairs magazine. President CHOI Oe-chool of YU said, “It is proved that YU alumni have been leading development and economic growth of Korea by many data. Request for transfer by Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister, Achievement of “Department of Saemaul Economic Development and dual-degree system” Studying for two years after incorporation into Department of Saemaul International Development of YU in 2024 … Conferment of dual-degree 2+2 Dual-degree system is expected to be expanded in various academic areas [June 30, 2022] <Opening ceremony of Korean Language Education & Culture Center in Western University of Cambodia> (From the left, Chairman Te Laurent, President CHOI Oe-chool, and President Kieng Rotana) The seed of Saemaul Educational & Cultural Korean Wave sowed by YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) started to bear fruits. Recently, President CHOI Oe-chool of YU visited Cambodia on a business trip with a schedule of five days and four nights. As the exchange & cooperation project implemented by YU with Cambodia showed visible performance, he intended to confirm the performance and check successive work. President CHOI visited high-level Cambodian high-level officials such as Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister, chairmen and presidents of main universities, and chairman of international NGO, etc. and had discussions on development of Cambodia through international exchange with YU during as short as four days of schedule. On the 13th of last month, President CHOI visited Western University of Cambodia as his first schedule.He attended opening ceremonies of Department of Saemaul Economic Development of Western University and Korean Language Education & Culture Center. In 2022, YU concluded an agreement on execution of “Saemaul Studies” and “Dual-degree system” with Western University and, in May 2022, the first 36 freshmen entered Department of Saemaul Economic Development of Western University. They will study in Western University for two years and then be incorporated into Department of Saemaul International Development of YU and study Saemaul in Korea for two years. This is the first case that a native subject created in Korea generates Saemaul scholars in both countries through a dual-degree system. In the historical ceremony, President Kieng Rotana of Western University said, “It will be a great help for development of Western University to learn about Korean culture & language as well as Saemaul Studies through exchange with YU, a prestigious private university of Korea. Department of Saemaul Economic Development and Korean Language Education & Culture Center will play an important role for globalization of Western University. I hope that graduates from Department of Saemaul Economic Development will have the opportunities to study abroad in Graduate School of YU by the dual-degree system.” President CHOI Oe-chool commented, “The role of Korea as a developed country is important. Especially, YU will play a role in international society to cultivate talents for contribution in human society in the aspect of education. The educational & research performances in Saemaul international development area achieved by YU are accepted by international society. I am convinced that 2+2 dual-degree system of YU and Western University will be a global success model in education area. The local national broadcasting company of Cambodia broadcasted the opening ceremonies of Department of Saemaul Economic Development of Western University and Korean Language Education & Culture Center including the interview with President CHOI Oe-chool to whole Cambodia. In fact, the person who sowed the seed for rooting Saemaul Studies in Cambodia was President CHOI. In May 2019, President CHOI, who was a professor of Department of Saemaul International Development of YU at that time, visited Cambodia on the request by Cambodian government and the university and had discussions on opening of Department of Saemaul International Development. President CHOI was a consultant for Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia and was requested by Deputy Prime Minister Yim Chhay Ly of Cambodia to transfer Saemaul Studies. At that time, President CHOI had discussions on opening of the department and execution of dual-degree system with Western University and the fruit was made. This is the reason why President CHOI visited Cambodia this time. Chairman Te Laurent of Western University said, “The purpose of foundation of Western University is cultivation of talents for national development. This is connected with the educational ideology of YU. Particularly, Korea has become an advanced country today with economic revival through cultivation of talents and Saemaul Undong in spite of past war and economic difficulty. The experiences in Korean development and expert of Saemaul Undong are essentially required to Cambodia. In this respect, opening of Department of Saemaul Economic Development of Western University is the most meaningful and important event since foundation of the university. Until now, 808 students have been admitted from 71 countries around the world, and 682 of them have received a master’s degree in Saemaul Studies. They are working as major policy makers, international development experts, and Saemaul Undong leaders in public agencies and international development NGO, etc. as well as high-level public officials in central ministries of each country. Those who are looking forward to opening of Department of Saemaul Economic Development in Western University in Cambodia are local alumni of YU PSPS in Cambodia. As the rank is determined based on the ratio between number of theses and IF of theses with exclusion of subjective qualitative evaluation including reputations of universities, it is deemed as an important index to estimate performances and quality of researches of universities. This year, 1,318 universities in 69 countries around the world which have published more than 800 theses in international academic journals for four years from 2017 to 2020 were evaluated. In case of Korea, 49 universities were included in the evaluation. Leiden Ranking is announced in five areas including Mathematics & Computer science, Biomedical & Health sciences, Life & Earth sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Social Sciences & Humanities as well as total ranking.

Election of 101 persons including 17 local government heads and 1 superintendent Alumnus LEE In-seon also entered National Assembly through a by-election. Alumni’s power in politician society again after 14 members in 14th National Assembly [June 27, 2022] YU Alumni Association held a congratulatory ceremony for alumnus winners of the 8th National Simultaneous Local Election in Daegu Grand Hotel at 6:00 pm on the 27th. In the 8th National Simultaneous Local Election held on the 1st, 101 YU alumni won including 1 metropolitan local government head, 1 superintendent, 16 basic local government heads, 23 metropolitan councilors, and 60 municipal councilors. In the by-election of National Assembly members held on the same day, alumnus LEE In-seon (Student ID 22 of Department of Food and Nutrition) run in Daegu Suseongeul was elected and entered National Assembly. Selection as Medical Research Center: MRC) of MRC Support Project by Ministry of Science & Technology and National Research Foundation of Korea KRW 14 billion of total budget including government expenditure and local governments’ support A study on prevention and treatment of aging metabolic diseases including obesity, diabetes, and osteoporosis based on Senotherapy [June 24, 2022] <Scene of YU Medical College> YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) will lead national research project to prevent and treat aging metabolic diseases such as diabetes and osteoporosis, etc. YU was selected as MRC of MRC Support Project managed by Ministry of Science & Technology and National Research Foundation of Korea by Ministry of Science & Technology and National Research Foundation of Korea. MRC support project was started in 1990 to find out and cultivate excellent research groups having world-level creativity and excellence and to solve social issues and includes MRC, SRC, and ERC. As being selected as MRC, YU will conduct a research on intervention technology for next-generation metabolic diseases based on Senotherapy from this year to February 2029.KRW 14 billion will be invested: KRW 700 million by YU, KRW 2.2 billion by YU Medical Center, and KRW 350 million by participating enterprises as well as large-scale central and local governments’ support including KRW 9.5 billion of government expenditure, KRW 700 million of Daegu-si’s support, and KRW 7 million of Gyeongsangbuk-do’s support. In the research, 12 professors from basic science area and clinical medical area such as Medical College, Department of Pharmacy, and College of Natural Science of YU participate and Daegu Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation (DGMIF), Biosolyx (a start-up enterprise of YU staff), and Wizmedi (an enterprise in the building of Business Incubation Center) also participate. Korea is rapidly entering a super-aged society with expectation that the ratio of aged population (65 or older persons) will exceed 20% in 2025. Metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and high-cholesterolosis are continuously increased due to aging and, especially in case of 70 years or older persons, diabetes prevalence is as high as 30%. Therefore, YU’s research on prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases based on Senotherapy attracts attention. YU has been accepted for research capability in basic research area with selection for MRC project for 3 consecutive years. Geriatric Vascular Disease Research Center was operated in 2005 and Smart Aging Integrated Research Center was operated in 2015 as MRC support. Synergy effect of this MRC project is more expected because previous research performances and human/material infrastructure are available for prevention and treatment of geriatric diseases. Professor PARK So-yeong (Physiology Department) of YU Medical College manages this project and said, “The purpose of this study is to prevent or treat aging metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and osteoporosis using aged cells as the target based on Senotherapy. A new paradigm will be suggested in prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases. We will contribute in development of bio industry in Daegu/Gyeongbuk medi city through government-industry-academy researches as well as cultivation of excellent basic medical researchers of next generation.”

Nine (six administrative and three technical jobs) passed … The most successful applicants in whole colleges Proved highest level of competitiveness with 32 successful applicants in recent 5 years Result of systematic support in whole selection courses including written tests and interviews by College Job Plus Center [June 09, 2022] <Students and graduates from YU who were finally selected as probationary employees in 2022 National Job Level 7 Test for Local Talents> YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) produced 9 successful applicants in 2022 National Job Level 7 Test for Local Talents. It is the largest number in whole colleges. Recently, Ministry of Personnel Management announced a list of 161 successful applicants (100 administrative and 61 technical jobs) in 2022 National Job Level 7 Test. Among them, 9 persons (6 administrative and 3 technical jobs) from YU took the largest share in whole colleges. Successful applicants from YU consist of JANG Jun-gyoo (Graduate from Department of Public Administration), KIM Na-yeon, KIM Su-hyeon, and RHYU Hyeon-ji (4th grade of Department of Public Administration), LEE Ye-lin (Graduate from Department of Media and Information Studies), and CHOI Eun-hee (Graduate from Department of Korean Language and Literature) for administrative jobs and KIM Kwang-il (4th grade of Faculty of Chemical Engineering), SEOK Dong-heon, and LEE Kyeong-seo (Graduate from Faculty of Chemical Engineering) for technical jobs. Last year, YU produced 7 successful applicants, the largest number in the colleges in Gyeongbuk Area. Successful applicants for recent 5 years reaches 32 persons. YU has been showing the highest competitiveness level in National Job Level 7 Test for Local Talents.YU makes systematic and active support through an exclusive unit (College Job Plus Center) at the level of YU. YU takes care of students in the whole selection process, from the recruiting stage of college recommendees to written tests and interviews. This year, whole 9 applicants for interviews are included in the successful applicant list. KIM Na-yeon, a graduate-to-be from Department of Public Administration in February next year, said, “From a low grade, I have been interested in the National Job Level 7 Test for local talents. I heard about National Job Level 7 for local talents supported by YU and established the goal and made the preparations early in time. Gradual preparations I made for a long time under the guide by tutor Prof. SEONG Do-gyeong gave me psychological stability for the test as well as learning. Especially, PAST education course provided by Prof. SEONG Do-gyeong in every vacation was highly helpful. I’d like to recommend the students who prepare for public official exam to participate in such program.” YU recruits applicants for National Job Level 7 Test for Local Talents, prepares lectures for written tests and interviews, and allocates exclusive professor tutors, every year. Also, YU supports mock exams and studies for written tests through College Job Plus Center and provides meetings with previous successful applicants for students to prepare for interviews. Director JEONG Jin-yeong of College Job Plus Center said, “YU shows high grades every year because it makes systematic support in every course from recruiting to public official aptitude tests and interviews for final pass in order to help students practically. The students interested in public officials may be highly supported by the programs operated by YU. YU College Job Plus Center also operates various tailored programs for employment and career guidance for general enterprises and public agencies, etc. We will make actively support students to find suitable careers to meet their aptitude and to be employed by intended agencies.” National Job Level 7 Test for Local Talents was provided in 2005 in order to strengthen local representativeness of official jobs by employing local talents uniformly. Qualified students and graduates recommended by colleges are selected through written tests (PAST and the Constitution), career paper review, and interviews under management by the Ministry of Personnel Management. Successful applicants in this year will complete basic education for adaption to public officials and enhancement of job capability in the first half of next year and will work as trainees in each central administrative agency. The training period is about one year and, after completion of the period, they will be employed as regular level 7 public officials.

Thesis of Professors KIM Ji-hoe and Sana Iram of Department of Biomedical Engineering was inserted in recent version of a famous international journal. Development of source technology for treatment of colorectal cancer with use of a material to suppress activation of colorectal cancer cell proliferation regulatory protein Successive study is planned to develop new drugs for treatment of colorectal cancer … Large interest by domestic/foreign biology & drug companies [June 10, 2022] <From the left, Professor KIM Ji-hoe and Research Professor Sana Iram of YU Department of Biomedical Engineering> The research team of Professor KIM Ji-hoe of Department of Biomedical Engineering of YU (President CHOI Oe-chool) developed source technology for treatment of colorectal cancer with suppression of proliferation of colorectal cancer cells. The research team developed serum protein TN to control cancer cell proliferation and metastasis and identified colorectal cancer cell-specific proliferation control by such protein. Also, the team found high level of TN protein activation suppressant in green tea and identified colorectal cancer cell proliferation control effect of such substance. Such result of research is evaluated as source technology for development of an effective and safe new anticancer drug for treatment of colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is one of domestic representative drugs and ranks at 3rd position in domestic cancer incidences. Especially, Korea is known as Rank 1 country of colorectal cancer incidence in the world. Colorectal cancer may be simply excised if it is diagnosed early in time. However, operational excision is limited depending on progress of cancer and, due to high risk of recurrence and metastasis, chemotherapy and radiotherapy should be concurrently applied. Various anticancer substances have been developed and used for cancer treatment until now but most anticancer drugs are limited in terms of their effects and side effects. Especially, various researches are conducted to develop specific targets and activation suppressants for development of anticancer drugs with specific effects and guaranteed safety for treatment of colorectal cancer and such result of research attracts attention of academic and industrial societies. Professor KIM Ji-hoe disclosed his successive research plan, “The performance of research will be the source technology to overcome current limitation in treatment of colorectal cancer. We have a plan to develop a new drug to overcome the limitation in current colorectal cancer drugs by identifying clear mechanism of TN protein to control progress and metastasis of colorectal cancer and by developing more effective TN activation suppressants.” The research team applied patent registration of the developed technology and domestic/foreign bio drug developers and manufacturers showed large interest in the research result and new drug development plan of YU. In the research, Research Professor Sana Iram and Professor KIM Ji-hoe of YU Department of Biomedical Engineering participated as lead author and corresponding author, respectively, and the research was conducted with the support by Basic Research Project (outstanding scientists of engineering research institutes and local colleges) by National Research Foundation of Korea and Project for Development of Foods of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries by Korea Institute of Planning and Evaluation for Technology in Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. The research result was 연구결과는inserted in International Journal of Biological Macromolecules (6.953 of IF), a famous international journal in the area of target molecules for treatment of diseases, in June 2022.
