Total reduction of 4.5 billion KRW... Financial resources to be covered by cutting down on various project budgets and withdrawing from reserves 10% of tuition paid in the first semester of 2020 to be deducted in advance for the second semester tuition [August 6, 2020] YU (President Sur Gil-soo) decided to return 10% of tuition back to the students. Those subject to the reduction are students who enrolled for the first semester of 2020. The refund will be for 10% of the actual paid amount per student for the first semester tuition, and it will be returned by deducting from the tuition for the second semester. Those scheduled to graduate in 2020 will receive the amount to the individual bank accounts before graduation. The tuition discount is worth a total of about 4.5 billion KRW. To appropriate for the tuition discount, YU plans to cut down on various project budgets, draw from its reserves, and utilize scholarships, etc. YU also paid out a special scholarship totaling 2 billion KRW by paying 100,000 KRW each to its approximately 20,000 students back in May. <From fourth on left - YU President Sur Gil-soo, Student Council President Park Jong-joo> YU Student Council President Park Jong-joo said, “All of the students had a hard first semester due to the unprecedented situation of COVID-19. During the past semester, the Student Council worked hard to represent the voices of the students.” He added, “We were able to bring about positive results as everyone at the university worked together despite the difficult situation. The Student Council will take the lead to help students study in a better environment.” YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “I am well aware that students are facing financial and psychological difficulties as the COVID-19 situation prolongs.” It is a tough time for the university as well, but we decided to cut tuition for next semester to overcome COVID-19 together with the students. YU will do its best to provide administrative and financial support so that students can focus on their studies.” Meanwhile, YU is constructing an educational and research environment infrastructure to ensure the rights to study for students, while also striving to provide administrative students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the regular curriculum, we have constructed an infrastructure to allow various extracurricular programs such as employment support programs to be conducted in real-time online. Library book delivery services implemented in the first semester and psychological quarantine consulting to beat COVID blues were also received well by students.

YU took first place (78th in the world) in the Mathematics & Computer Science sector in the ‘2020 Leiden Ranking’. YU has been exhibiting dominating research capacities by taking first place six years in a row in the 2020 Leiden Ranking for mathematics and computer science. YU also placed 13th in the overall ranking. YU ranked 9th in Life & Earth Sciences and 24th in Physical Sciences & Engineering in the nation, thus being recognized for its extraordinary research capacities over various academic fields. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “Yu’s research capacities have been receiving good assessments in global university rankings. We are uncontested in math and computer science, ranking first in the nation, and we also receive good evaluations in various other academic fields.” He added, “YU will spare no support to pursue world-class research capacities.” The Leiden Ranking is a world university ranking by Leiden University of the Netherlands that evaluates the research capacities of university research capacities based on the qualitative levels of research papers. It excludes subjective qualitative evaluation elements such as university reputation, and ranks universities based on the number of theses and frequency of citation, and therefore, it is judged to be an important indicator for assessing the research outcomes of universities and the quality of the research. This year, it evaluated a total of 1,76 universities around the world that published a minimum of 800 studies over a period of four years from 2015 to 2018. 44 Korean universities were included in this. Leiden Ranking awards the overall ranking and a total of five sectors such as Mathematics & Computer Science, Biomedical & Health Sciences, Life & Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Social sciences & Humanities.

Received 610 million KRW in additional funding for selection in project to construct research equipment and to promote joint research Selected for ‘Core Research Support Center’ establishment support project last year receiving up to 3.6 billion KRW over 6 years Expected to improve university research capacities and have synergy effects in fostering professional researchers [July 6, 2020] YU (President Sur Gil-soo) was selected for the ‘2020 Basic Science Research Capacity Improvement Project’ supported by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation. The ‘Basic Science Research Capacity Improvement Project’ is a project that supports the construction of research equipment needed for growth and advancement in order to improve the university’s R&D capacities and to build an efficient research ecosystem. It is a support project overseen by the Ministry of Education with the goal of promoting joint research centering on core research support centers specialized by research fields. Universities are selected and supported in the three fields of ▲establishing a core research center ▲constructing research equipment ▲promoting joint research. This year, YU was selected for the Research Equipment Construction Support Project (Principal Researcher Professor of Pharmacy Nam Joo-won) and the Joint Research Promotion Support Project (School of Chemistry and Biochemistry Cho Dae-won). YU plans to construct the ‘High Resolution Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer’ with government funding of 310 million KRW for the research equipment construction support project. This new research equipment will be able to analyze various natural substances and medical substances, and also analyze very small quantities and highly difficult substances such as dioxin, which is very toxic. It will be used for qualitative and quantitative analysis, identification and verification of compounds encompassing all sectors including environment, food safety, clinical study, forensic toxicology, pharmaceutics, and chemicals. It is expected that with the construction of this research equipment, the YU Natural Materials Medical Substance Core Research Support Center will be reinforced with qualitative analysis functions, therefore becoming a general analysis center that can perform structural, ingredient and content analysis. In addition, a total of 300 million KRW will be received for the Joint Research Promotion Support Project from this year until February 2023 and will be used for research activity costs and material costs. Last year, the YU ‘Natural Material Medical Substance Core Research Center (Center Director Nam Joo-won)’ was selected for the basic science research capacity improvement project, and it is pursuing the project with national funding of about 3.6 billion KRW (600 million KRW annually) for up to six years (3+3 years). YU Industry-Academic Research Office Director Park Yong-wan said, “We were selected last year for the Core Research Support Center establishment project and additionally selected for the resaerch equipment construction and joint research promotion support project this year. We are thus expected to be able to create synergy in pursuing basic science research capacity improvement projects.” He added, “The university will provide full support to not only improve the qualitative levels of research, but also to foster research experts.”

The YU Alumni Professors Association “gathered the will of alumni professors to help students who are also our juniors” Operating a scholarship fund for students... Donated 160 million KRW in scholarships Continued donations to scholarships for students by professors and employees [July 7, 2020] The YU Cheonma Professors Association (Chairman Baek Eung-yul) handed over 30 million KRW in scholarships for students. The Cheonma Professors Association is an association comprised of professors who are alumni of YU and there are currently 243 members. The Cheonma Professors Association has been operating a separate scholarship fund for students. They handed over 160 million KRW in scholarships to students so far and they decided to donate an additional 30 million KRW. At 2 p.m. On July 6, YU Cheonma Professors Association Chairman Baek Eung-yul and Vice-chairman Moon Yong-sun met with YU President Sur Gil-soo asking to use the scholarship funds for students. YU plans to use his scholarship fund for students in the second semester of 2020. YU Cheonma Professors Association Chairman Baek Eung-yul (School of Materials Science and Engineering professor) said, “As COVID-19 continues to spread, we know that students are facing many difficulties in their studies. YU alumni professors chipped in to help, however trivial, students who are also our juniors, with their studies.” He added, “I hope that you remember that you always have professors and alumni seniors who are quietly rooting for you and hope that you can navigate through such hardships.” Professors have been continuously donating to scholarship funds for students this year. On July 1, the YU Female Professors Association also donated 20 million KRW for scholarships. YU plans to use this scholarship to provide support for students having difficulties with their studies due COVID-19. YU President Sur Gil-soo said, “Both students and professors are facing difficult times due to COVID-19. Recently, professors and employees have been voluntarily giving money to be used for student scholarships.” He added, “I am very thankful as the president of the university as I have to manage the university amidst a situation with many financial difficulties for the school. I am confident that if professors, employees, students, and even alumni all unite, we will be able to wisely overcome COVID-19.”

This ceremony was held at 4 p.m. on June 20 at the YU Daegu Campus (Daemyeong-dong, Daegu) Business Administration Hall auditorium. YU President Sur Gil-soo, School of Business Dean Lee Gang-il, YU Medical Center Director Kim Sung-ho, YU General Alumni Association Chairman Jung Tae-il, Master’s Degree General Alumni Association Chairman Yoon Jung-rok, AMP General Alumni Association Chairman Jang Se-cheol, as well as Daegu Superintendent of Education Kang Eun-hee, Nam-gu Office Chief Cho Jae-gu and other internal and outside figures and alumni association executives attended to congratulate the 50th anniversary of the YU Graduate School of Business Administration. Dean Ahn Seung-cheol said, “The YU Graduate School of Business Administration was opened in March of 1970 and it is the first in the region and is one of the schools with the longest history and tradition in Korea. This was held with the goal of innovating business administration education that will lead the future in the 4th industrial revolution and to search for business administration education plans of a new paradigm. <Commemorative tree planting> The 50th year anniversary sculpture unveiling ceremony and tree planting event were held at the garden of the Business Administration Hall at 3 p.m. The sculpture that was installed was produced with funds gathered by the graduate school’s Master’s Degree General Alumni Association and Advanced Management Program General Alumni Association alumni. The title is <Ungbi - Patriotism - 2020> (granite, 3,500x1,800xh2,850mm) and it is a work by YU alumni sculptor Lee Byung-joon. It is based on five volumes of books and it formatively expresses the aspirations for purity, love, happiness, hope and wishes. Also, the YU Graduate School of Business Administration 50 Year History Book was published to commemorate the 50-year anniversary. This book summarizes records remaining at the university and various materials stored by professors and alumni, containing the 50 years of the YU Graduate School of Business Administration. Meanwhile, the YU Graduate School of Business Administration was opened in March 1970 and graduated a total of 9.982 business professionals including 2,652 in master’s degree courses, 6,123 in the advanced management program 167 in the management research course, 112 in labor and management courses, 87 in female business administration course, 559 in the professional management program, and 309 in the golf advanced management program.

22 meter long ‘Tunnel Fountain’ at the front gate of the campus... Walk through the water spouts to cool down LED lights at night color the water spouts attracting people looking for things to see and places to rest Alumnus Choi Hyeok-young (Civil Engineering class of ‘63 donated 100 million KRW for installation costs saying, “I hope it can be a place of rest for students and the community’ The ‘108 fountain nozzles’ hope to wash away the concerns and anguish of visitors to the school [June 19, 2020] <YU Cheonma Tunnel Fountain> The ‘Cheonma Tunnel Fountain’ that gushes out streams of water to cool down the sweltering heat of ‘Daefrica (Daegu + Africa)’ was installed at YU (President Sur Gil-soo). YU installed the ‘Cheonma Tunnel Fountain’ at Cheonmajimun, which is the main gate of the Gyeongsan Campus, from December of last year to March of this year, and recently conducted test operations. The completion ceremony was held at 5 p.m. On June 19 prior to the regular operation for the summer season. The ‘Cheonma Tunnel Fountain’ is a tunnel-type fountain where people can walk into the fountain. It stands 3 meters tall, 6 meters wide, and 22 meters long, and there are a total of 108 fountain nozzles. The 108 fountain nozzles represent the meaning of washing away concerns and anguishes of people visiting the school through this fountain. A steel walkway was installed on top of the water and below the fountain tunnel allowing visitors to walk through the refreshing spouts of water to cool off in the summer. LED lights were installed on the nozzles to embroider the campus with lighted water gushes at night. The YU campus is frequently visited by members of the community thanks to its reputation of being a beautiful campus with the mirror pond, cherry blossoms and love road along Cheonma-daero in front of the main building of YU, and the path to the folk village. The YU Cheonma Tunnel Fountain will offer extravagant attractions and a place for rest from the entrance to the campus, and it is thus expected to attract even more students and community members. This fountain cost 100 million KRW and it was paid in full by YU Department of Civil Engineering class of ‘63 alumnus and president of the Choi Hyeok-young Scholarship Foundation Choi Hyuk-yeong (77) (right on above photo). This is not the first time that Mr. Choi gave a huge gift to his alma mater. In 2018, he paid for the entire cost for installing ‘Big Time’, the large clock on the upper exterior of the Central Library, which is a landmark of YU standing 80m high. Mr. Choi said, “I hope this can be a place of rest that students and community members can take a moment to rest at while visiting YU. I will continue to support the development of YU and my juniors at YU whenever I have the chance.” <Cheonma Tunnel Fountain (Night)> Mr. Choi is also generously supporting students. He founded the Choi Hyeok-young to continuously give scholarships to not only his juniors at his alma mater, but to high school and college students nationwide. Mr. Choi not only offers scholarships to students, but also acts as a mentor who communicates with students through letters. He valued each and every one of the letters sent by students who received scholarships and published a book titled ‘Dialog of Love’ and he published a total of three books starting with ‘Dialog of Love I’ in 2015.

Received best evaluation thus receiving 7.8 billion KRW for second year project cost High evaluations for university long-term development plans and consistency Also received good assessments for achieving business goal and program operation performance [June 11, 2020] YU (President Sur Gil-soo) received the highest grade, ‘A’, in the first annual evaluation of the ‘University Innovation Support Project’ supported by the Ministry of Education and National Research Foundation. The University Innovation Support Project aims at improving the basic capacities of universities and support strategic specialization to respond to changes in the future society, while constructing a future-oriented creative personnel incubation system based on national innovative growth through the autonomous innovation of universities. The project period is from 2019 to 2021. The second year (2020) and third year (2021) project cost distribution will be supported in connection with the previous year’s annual evaluation results. Universities participating in the project are categorized into type 1 (autonomous agreement type) and type 2 (empowerment type). For type 1, 131 autonomous improvement universities based on the ‘2018 University Basic Capacity Diagnosis and Faculty Fostering Institute Diagnosis’ results participated in five regions (capital area/Daegu-Gyeongbuk-Gangwon/Chungcheong/Honam-Jeju/Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam regions). For type 2, 12 universities that passes the selection evaluation among 30 empowerment universities according to the ‘2018 University Basic Capacity Diagnosis’ results were selected. YU, which is under the type 1 Daegu-Gyeongbuk-Gangwon region, received the highest ranking in the 2019 annual evaluation with an ‘A’, and will thus receive about 7.8 billion KRW for the second year project funds. YU received approximately 6.5 billion KRW in the project cost for the first year last year. The University Innovation Support Project annual evaluation that the Ministry of Education notified to each university is the result of qualitative and quantitative evaluations for the first year project pursuance performance. In this evaluation, YU was assessed to have systematic internal and external analysis and diagnosis, and therefore, the University Innovation Support Project judged that YU had outstanding long-term development plans and consistency. Furthermore, it received good evaluations as its project goal was set in detail and reasonably, and for its first year project goal achievement and program operation performance. YU President Sur Gil-soo said “By receiving the top ranking in the first year of the University Innovation Support Project, the competitiveness and performance of the university innovation project being pursued by YU has been proven.” He added, “As we have procured more project funding by receiving the A rating, we will provide full support to achieve the goal of the University Innovation Support Project.”
